Is the reputation and quality of Chinese products really that bad?

Update on: July 09, 2023

China is an internationally renowned manufacturing power. Although Chinese goods are very popular abroad, many people still misunderstand the level of Chinese production, leading to "the stereotype that poor quality products are made in China".

china products quality and reputation

Why is the reputation of Chinese products not good?

Public perception, average quality of imported products, and demand for low-cost and low-quality products are three factors affecting the market:

Public perception

China is the source of many low-quality products and has been since the beginning of reforms and opening. The quality of Chinese manufacturing at that time was low. There were problems with the products in terms of appearance, size, and strength, as well as durability, safety, and durability. It is this stereotype about Chinese products that has led to some people's misconceptions.

This is mainly because there are not enough managers and advanced technologies. China's manufacturing sector has slowly realized the importance of quality in the development and survival of its enterprises. They have introduced modern production equipment, and advanced management skills, and continuously improved the quality of the products through technological innovation and continual improvement.

China's rapid industrialization over the last few years has allowed the country to produce products on par with other advanced countries. While China has industrialized very quickly, attitudes toward products of specific origins will change over time. Even if a country goes from making cheap junk to high-end tech in one day, it can take decades for the public to accept that.

Imported products of average quality

The second factor is the quality of goods that are imported by Western countries from China. It's no secret that most of the goods imported from China by Western countries are cheap. It's about the market dynamics, too: customers don't really care what they buy as long as it is cheap. Chinese factories also deliver.

Demand for low-quality, low-cost products made in China

You have to realize that, whether you like it, or not, lower-quality products are in demand in many countries. This is true even for developed Western countries.

Many importers realized they could increase sales by selling products at lower prices. To achieve this, they choose Chinese products of low quality at the expense of quality.

Costs of production increase when you produce better products. Importers generally demand the lowest price while still demanding the best quality products.

Take a look at the picture. The yellow circle and the blue circle are used to advertise many "Made in China", products and services. This is because it's what people want. This was the original layout of China's manufacturing sector. Importers are expecting inferior products. Now, people are choosing more red, blue, and yellow. It is because of this that people believe China's products are inferior.

Does the bad reputation of Chinese goods really exist? Perhaps not.

The Chinese manufacturing industry has a great reputation, but it is not dominant in the market. This is an accurate portrayal.

What is the quality of goods made in China?

Usually, as long as you pay enough, you can get high-quality industrial products in exchange for your conventional products.

(For example, you can directly find a legitimate factory, propose customized quality standards, negotiate a good price, sign a contract, and pay the full amount after passing the inspection. The factory dare not deceive you, otherwise, you will not receive the goods, and third-party testing agencies will not help the factory pit you.)

If you say that China cannot produce high-quality products because the quality of the Chinese products you buy is poor, it is too illogical.

The reality is that the quality of products made in China is poor because they only do big things with how much money they spend. At the same time, many Western buyers explicitly demand that their contract manufacturers in China cut corners, even though they know it will reduce product quality.

"Made in China" is preferred by international brands

Did you know the phone that you use today may have been manufactured in China? Apple is the most popular brand in the entire world. Almost all Apple products are assembled and manufactured in China. Apple "lingers" on Chinese production despite the recent trend to return to China due to policy agreements. Apple bargains with Chinese merchants about import issues.

Apple is not the only electronic manufacturer seeking Chinese cooperation. Chinese manufacturing is of high quality and has a good reputation around the world. How can they have so many distributors in China if they think that China is unable to produce high-quality goods?

Although China may have had quality problems with its large-scale products a few decades ago, today many factories produce products that meet or exceed Western standards of quality.

Contrary to popular belief Chinese manufacturers are increasingly focused, on developing world-renowned brand names, using cutting-edge technologies, and producing valuable products.

It is therefore completely false to claim that Chinese products are of poor quality. Chinese companies can produce with cutting-edge technologies and the highest standards of quality.

In summary, Made in China ≠ Low cost + Low quality

China's future will not be just about commodities; it will also include technology.

China has had a long tradition of exporting goods to other countries. For a very long time, it was only involved in manufacturing. China's research and development capabilities are constantly being updated, which is a step in the right direction toward becoming a technological superpower. Some people have even "envied' China's independently-developed technology, but China has a tenfold attitude to this. Most people have a positive attitude towards Made in China. Some even think that China is better than Western countries.

Made in China is now one of the leading manufacturers in the world. China's manufacturing sector has improved its production technology and management. Many Chinese-made products, such as BYD cars, Huawei phones, and switches, or Lenovo laptops, can now compete with leading world brands. It is a lengthy and difficult process to transform the poor quality of Chinese manufacturing into a good one. This involves the efforts and investments of multiple parties, including the government, the enterprises, and the market. We believe that with the continued development and growth in China's manufacturing sector, more Chinese enterprises can reach the leading level of the world. We believe that China's manufacturing industry will continue to grow and improve the quality of its products, bringing better products to consumers around the world.

One last point (only my personal opinion), many Western buyers and companies were attracted to China by China’s relatively low labor costs years ago and increased profits by purchasing very low-cost materials from China significantly. They are blindly willing to accept lower China products quality than American factories. In this incident, Western capitalism’s greed for profit promoted the acceptance of low quality in the Western market.
